Perhaps the biggest of these changes is the one being made to 2042’s Specialist system. Acknowledging that replacing the series’ class system with individual Specialists has been “polarizing,” DICE announced that it will be bringing classes back and integrating Specialists into the classic roles of Assault, Support, Engineer, and Recon. This will follow changes made to the Specialists’ designs earlier this month, and DICE stated that it will continue to tweak their designs and voicelines to better suit the grittier tone of 2042’s world.

These changes to the Specialists are planned to debut in Season 3 later this year. Before then, though, Season 2 will see another major new gameplay feature introduced in the form of Vault Weapons. These are weapons currently exclusive to Battlefield 2042’s Portal mode that will become available in regular multiplayer through a new unlock feature called Assignments. Vault weapons will be added to the game over time alongside brand-new weapons, with the M16A3 assault rifle and M60E4 LMG from Battlefield 3 being the first.
Season 2 will also see the revamping of two of the game’s older maps, Renewal and Orbital, following the update that was made to the Kaleidoscope map a few weeks ago. DICE’s update video shows how several parts of the maps will be filled out with updated terrain and loads of new cover. Additionally, the reworked Battlefield 2042 maps will boast new capture points as well as reworked spawn points, which should result in players getting back into the fight faster. According to DICE, the reworked Renewal will arrive sometime in September, followed by Orbital in October.
Although DICE isn’t ready to fully reveal the new content coming with Season 2, the developer did tease the addition of a new map, a new Specialist, new weapons, and new gameplay options for Portal. It also teased that players can expect a similar amount of content in Battlefield 2042’s future seasons. That may not be enough to lure back players who felt burned by the state the game was in for the first several months of its lifespan, but at any rate, it looks like those still playing will have plenty of reason to continue doing so over the next few months.
Battlefield 2042 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
